A whole single day

A Whole Single Day
Boryana Telbis

The power of the Universe we inhabit is strikingly infinite and depressingly inscrutable. Everything in it is perpetually moving, lifting up dust and ash, and debris of the Sun, sending them to dance somewhere at the edge of nothing, and to make worlds.
No beginning.
No end.
Noone to witness their perfect rhythm.
Noone to give them a break.

And somewhere
In one sixteenth of a Universal beat,
In its own movement
As an act of repentance and justification for every apocalypse and supernova, every black hole and nebula, protuberance and dried-up cosmic river,
in an insanely set notion of time
our world exists.
Where we are both the paragon and the hangman.
Both the saviour and the serial killer.
Both the culprit and the simple man ready to forgive.

And all the roles have their rhythm and movement
That fall into step with some sort of clock hands
Eager to measure the hours
We have to mix up and fix up
What’s been left for us.
We created the hands ourselves as a shortcut
And now we have no way of stopping their treachery.

It’s best to be “here and now” but we never manage to be where we have to be. Because the very thought about the moment cracks it apart.
The moment is fragile. Ephemeral.

The only ones that manage are the little flies born with the morning and dying at dusk.
Ephemeroptera. Ephemeral creatures with wings. Those that live for a single day.

A whole single day.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen to people if each one of us could have the luxury of living fully for one single day.
A whole single day.
I think we might grow wings.
