A woman on the frontline

Lecture and video projection about one of the few well-known female war photographers

Christine Spengler was born in 1945 France and discovered her vocation in Chad, when she was 23 and travelling with her brother. They came across a group of rebels shooting at French helicopters, and Christine wanted to record the unusual scene so her brother, a fashion photographer, just handed her the camera which went on to become an integral part of her. Today, more than 40 years later, she is one of the few well-known female war photographers. The distinctive thing about her work is her peculiar perspective – which is that of the victims, the perspective of women and children. Her shots are well-known to the public from the pages of Paris-Match, Time, Newsweek, El País, TheNew York Times, Le Monde. She has received many awards for her work, and in 2002 she was voted Woman of the Year.
