The World as a Stage. A Lecture by Alex Majoli

May 29th, free admission

What happens to documentary photography in a world where everyone is already performing for the camera? In his lecture on May 29th in Hyperspace, Magnum photographer Alex Majoli will speak about the thin line between reality and staging, between testimony and spectacle. Through images of wars, protests, refugee camps, and seemingly ordinary moments from everyday life, he explores how photography reveals the theatricality of human existence.

Majoli will discuss his use of lighting in public spaces, the influence of theatre and cinema on his visual language, and the idea that every person “performs” themselves in front of the lens. The lecture will also address the larger question of what truth means in an age of constant observation, images, and self-representation.

Alex Majoli is an Italian photographer and a member of Magnum Photos. His work has been published in some of the world’s leading media outlets and focuses on conflicts, social crises, and themes connected to human behaviour and contemporary life. Majoli has developed a distinctive visual style in which documentary photography meets the language of the stage. He is the recipient of numerous international awards, including the Infinity Award and World Press Photo.
